Once, 19 impressive windmills stood around historic Schiedam. De Nieuwe Palmboom is one of the few remaining ones from that original ring. These tall, stone mills — called “brandersmolens” — were used to grind malt for the gin distilleries that made Schiedam world-famous.
The original Palmboom mill was mostly destroyed in 1901 by fire sparks from a burning factory across the canal. In 1988, plans were made to rebuild it. By 1993, the fully reconstructed windmill stood proudly once again. It now houses the Dutch Milling Grain Mill Museum.
Behind De Nieuwe Palmboom you’ll also find De Noord (a restaurant) and De Vrijheid, where grain is still milled into flour daily for bakers across the country. Malt is once again ground in De Nieuwe Palmboom — used for crafting traditional Dutch gin at the Dutch Distilled Museum.
