This monument along the Nederrijn symbolises the Battle of Heteren on 5 October 1944. During this battle, American paratroopers of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, fought against German occupying forces.
The name “Crossroads” refers to the location where American and German troops encountered each other and the battle began. A group of around 35 American soldiers faced a much larger German force of about 150 men.
Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Americans won the battle. One American soldier was killed, while dozens of German soldiers lost their lives.
