On the central of three moated islands once stood a fortified manor house, owned in the late Middle Ages by the noble Van Haemstede Montigny family. It later passed to the Van Borssele and Van Brederode families. The house was destroyed during the Eighty Years' War.
In the 17th century, Anthonis Studler van Zurck transformed the estate into a country retreat called ’t Oude Hof. According to tradition, he shared his architectural plans with the philosopher René Descartes, and the gardens of the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris served as their inspiration. Only two of the intended buildings were ever constructed.
The estate remained in the family until 1707. In 1830, the western outbuilding was demolished. In 1851, Jan J. van Reenen acquired the property at auction.
