Country estate Oosterhout - Nijmegen

In an elegant estate with a rich history lies Country estate Oosterhout. Now it is an exclusive location for overnight stays, meetings and weddings, but it was once a striking spot in the Overbetuwe.

The history of this location dates back to the 14th century. The lords of Bronckhorst founded Castle Notensteyn here. This castle was destroyed by a fire in 1585 and then rebuilt. In 1627, it came into the hands of the Van Hackfort family, who named the manor house 'Huis Oosterhout' – after the nearby village of Oosterhout.

After the Waaldijk broke through in 1809, the castle was washed away in the floods. Huis Oosterhout was rebuilt, but again flooded by a dike breach in 1820. Yet another manor house was built. Twenty years later, a neoclassical manor with farm stood here, this time a bit further from the river and built on a mound.

The noble Van Boetzelaer family acquired the estate in 1870. Over the years, they enlarged the house, restored it and modernised it. A star forest was laid out and a vista lane to the Waaldijk. Besides the main building of the estate, there are also two historic farms, a coach house, a gamekeeper's house and a pinetum. Many surrounding woods and farmlands belong to the Oosterhout estate.

The origin of the estate dates back to the 17th century, when wealthy families built country houses to escape the hustle of the city. The same in Oosterhout, where the original country estate served as a summer residence for a prominent family from Nijmegen. In later centuries, the building was extended and adapted, but the historic character remained. The classical symmetry, leafy driveway and surrounding park still recall that golden era of country estates.

The main building of Country estate Oosterhout is a stylish manor that preserves the balance between authenticity and comfort. Inside, the house has been thoroughly renovated, retaining historical elements such as high ceilings, wooden beams and classic window layout. Outside, the estate is surrounded by centuries-old parkland, complete with pond, orchard and walnut trees.

Although the property has had several owners and purposes over the years, the main function of the house as a country retreat and rural residence has remained central. The current owners have revived that heritage, preserving the authentic features while also focusing on sustainability and quality.
