This estate is a centuries-old heerlijkheid that is still privately owned and managed by a family. Surrounded by orchards, old lanes and the floodplains of the Waal, it creates a romantic picture.
The history of this country estate goes back to 1304, with strong ties to the noble families Van Gendt, Von Quadt von Wickeradt, Fabricius van Leyenburg and later Van Boetzelaer. In 1648, Berthold van Gendt, lord of Loenen, was one of the signatories of the Peace of Münster on behalf of Gelderland. Through heiress Maria van Gendt (1654–1682), the estate came into the hands of the Von Quadt von Wickeradt family, who owned it for five generations until 1835.
In 1835, Jonkheer Johan Carel Willem Fabricius van Leyenburg bought the estate; he built the current house Loenen in the early 19th century. His descendants, the barons Van Boetzelaer, remained there until the sale in 2003.
The historic house has since been transformed into a stylish hotel and Bed & Breakfast, known as De Heerlijkheid Loenen. There are seven B&B rooms in the main building that guests can book for overnight stays. In addition, the country estate is available for meetings, weddings and small-scale events.
