In 1596, a homestead is sold here and in 1630 Gerard van Teylingen buys the area to establish a country estate. In 1803, it is demolished and David J. van Lennep buys the land. Many families spend their summers on the country estates Woestduin, Vinkenduin and Leyduin, including the poet and writer Jacob van Lennep. This area lies between a dune ridge and the Leidse Trekvaart, which dates from 1657.
The nature area forms a combined dune and forest landscape with objects such as follies, a cascade, an ice cellar, a coach house, a vinkenbaan and even a now disappeared horse race track.
In 1919, the estate is divided into three parts and Vinkenduin is separated. The manor house is demolished around 1920. Architect Andries A. de Maaker (1868–1964) designs a new house.
