Coevorden Castle dates from the 11th century and has a rich history. The name Coevorden refers to the ford (voorde) where cattle (cows) were traditionally driven across. In 1046, the bishop of Utrecht had an artificial mound, a motte, constructed here as a defence to guard the trade route from Germany to Groningen and Friesland. The toll levied on this passage through the Coevorden marshes regularly led to conflicts between the lord of Coevorden and the lord of Utrecht. A settlement of craftsmen grew at the foot of the castle and became the town of Coevorden.
The castle houses a restaurant with a terrace, making it a perfect place to stop during your bike ride for lunch, drinks or dinner.
