Castle of Maurick

Castle of Maurick - Vught

N 51.65837 / E 5.306117

Hidden in nature on an island of 2.2 hectares on the river Dommel in Vught, lies Kasteel Maurick. Previously it was called Heymhuizing. In 1464 Goossen Heym bought the castle. Many historical events have taken place since then: when Prince Maurits laid siege to 's-Hertogenbosch in 1601, he took up residence in the castle. Frederik Hendrik who besieged the city of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1629 also took up residence in the castle. From 1681 the castle has been in the possession of the Beresteyn family. They inherited all kinds of rights such as keeping two swans, the fishing rights for the fishing grounds there and the right of the gun. The castle was bought in 1884 by Augustine van Lanschot. He used it as a summer residence and had it restored and renovated from 1891-1892. His son August, who was mayor of Vught, became the owner and partly used the castle as a town hall. After 1963 the castle was sold and has had several managers. It is currently owned by the Brabant Monuments Fund and is in use as a restaurant.
