Castle Nieuw Herlaer has had many different functions over the centuries. It was originally founded around 1532 and named "Nieuw Herlaer" to distinguish it from nearby Oud Herlaer.
From the end of the eighteenth century it was used as a seminary starting in 1798. Later it served as an institute for the deaf and mute between 1840 and 1910, followed by use as a monastery from 1912, then as a care home for people with physical and mental disabilities, and later a youth psychiatric institution.
In 1978 Nieuw Herlaer was taken over by a real estate company. The outbuildings were then used by an alternative living group called “Healthy Building and Living”. Between 2006 and 2010 the castle was restored and renovated.
