Brasserie de Vrijheid - Oosterhout

N 51.6426936 / E 4.8568714

'Eat first' is Oosterhout's most famous expression. There's a great story behind this, which the Oosterhouters will be happy to tell you more about. Just ask them.

Good food and drink is what Oosterhout is known for. The historical building 'de Vrijheid' is a good place to be. Enjoy a delicious drink, a bite to eat, friendliness and freedom here.

Brasserie de Vrijheid is located next to the Vrijheidshuis. At the end of the 16th century, the Oosterhout elite proclaimed the village an 'independent freedom'.
The new administrative building came on the Heuvel and was called the Vrijheidshuis. It was built in 1617 during the 12-year truce in the Eighty Years' War. Administrators could meet there, documents found storage, justice was dispensed and a prison was set up. Oosterhout grew into one of the largest villages in Brabant (with more than six thousand souls) and was allowed to call itself a city from 1809. The Vrijheidshuis became town hall and was rebuilt and enlarged several times over the years. In 1941, the town council moved to Huize Limburg, a little further away.

The restaurant used to be a tavern where innocent people would enjoy a drink to their freedom after being acquitted. Today's restaurant 'de Vrijheid' owes its name to the status acquired in the 16th century, a 'freedom', and toasting to freedom over the centuries!
