Between Rhenen and Vianen is a large number of brickworks. Most have long since ceased producing bricks, but around 1900 some 15 factories on either side of the river were in full production. The clay for the bricks was mined in the immediate vicinity. The river was, of course, a wonderful supplier of clay for the bricks.
Bosscherwaarden in Wijk bij Duurstede is one of the brickworks where the last brick was fired some time ago. Founded in 1923, the factory with its ring kiln and characteristic chimney is a protected national monument. From sunrise to sunset, you can cycle around the site and take a closer look at the ring furnace, the pontoon and the restored crane.
