A bakspieker is a typical structure from Twente, once used to store grain and other valuable goods. It’s built raised on wooden posts to keep out vermin, a clever construction you’ll still find in this region. The Boombakspieker near Lattrop-Breklenkamp is a beautifully preserved example and shows how people in the past were both practical and creative with materials.
But this one has something truly unique: a large tree (Dutch: boom) grows right through the hut. Or maybe the hut was built around the tree... No one knows for sure. Either way, it’s a rare and fascinating sight!
