The Wierdense Veld is an expansive nature reserve of around 440 hectares managed by Landschap Overijssel, originally a raised bog area, now partly grassed over with heath and bog.
To restore living raised bog, the water level is being raised. As a result, species are returning such as marsh clubmoss, sundew, small cranberry and cross-leaved heath; plants that are typical of wet, nutrient-poor bog environments.
The screen offers a view over pools and water features, a paradise for birds. You can observe bird species here in all seasons, such as the short-eared owl, kestrel, meadow pipit and marsh harriers. Sometimes even cranes stop by.
You can park at Spikkenplasweg, then it’s a short walk to the viewing screen. Bring binoculars or a camera and keep in mind: patience and silence pay off...
