Birdwatching point De Bol is part of the nature reserve Drijvers Vogelweid de Bol. This special area owes its name to the rounded sandbar that used to lie between the tidal channels. Today, the landscape consists of flower-rich grasslands and water-filled pools that together provide a home for countless birds.
The area itself is not accessible. This way, peace and quiet are preserved for the birds. Fortunately, from this viewpoint and the surrounding roads you can still fully enjoy nature. Especially at high tide on the Wadden Sea, large groups of birds gather here to rest or forage.
In spring, you’ll hear the calls of meadow birds like black-tailed godwits and lapwings, which nest here. Ducks and little grebes float on the pools, while brent geese descend en masse in spring and autumn. With a bit of luck, you might also spot waders such as redshanks, oystercatchers or even a dotterel.
Not only birds feel at home here. In the lower parts, plants that like a touch of salt grow, such as glasswort, sea aster and the rare red eyebright. These add extra colour to the area during the summer months.
