The Stinkgat is the remnant of a creek located in the Van Haaftenpolder. Part of the creek is still visible, and along its banks you’ll find bird watching screen De Steltkluut. In 1994, this area was transformed from farmland into grassland as part of the nature development project Plan Tureluur. The screen overlooks the wet meadows and creek system, making it a great place to spot many different bird species.
In spring and autumn, it’s a hotspot for migrating waders like the redshank and bar-tailed godwit. In the surrounding fields, birds such as the avocet and skylark breed. You might also spot rare visitors like the marsh sandpiper or broad-billed sandpiper. In winter, the area attracts large flocks of geese and wigeons.
To reach the screen, park your bike at the end of Hollaereweg. From there, follow the path through the meadows past grazing cows. Once you arrive, you can watch the birds without disturbing them. For an even wider view, walk a bit further to the nearby sea dike where you’ll get a panoramic view of the salt marshes and mudflats near Sint Annaland.
