You stand here at the border area between the old, organically grown landscape of Wieringen and the tightly designed polder structure of the Wieringermeer. The landscape of the Wieringermeer did not grow, but was carefully thought out with straight lines of roads, ditches and plots.
How different it is on Wieringen, where the landscape rolls, paths wind and irregular winding roads run. Here boundaries were determined by waterways or forests or simply… by time.
The straight allotment in the Wieringermeer arose in the 20th century, during the draining and designing of the polder. Farmers received spacious, rectangular plots that were efficiently workable. Everything logically arranged, with attention to production and accessibility.
