In popular speech, they also call this vast shifting sand area 'The Barren Dunes'. Why that is is something you will notice once you are on the sandy plain.

The wind has free rein and makes the sand drift in different directions. The area is constantly changing and this is easy to see if you climb the watchtower more often.
