Aekingerzand & Aekingerbroek - Elsloo

A stop at the Aekingerzand is a good idea. These barren dunes look different in every season. The area is surrounded by forest and heathland, but there is almost no vegetation in the area itself. As a result, sand and wind have free rein.

Areas with sand dunes are rare and therefore protected throughout Europe. Therefore, afforestation is actively prevented here to preserve the special drifting sand area.

In the 20th century, streams were straightened so that the land became drier and farmers could make the best possible use of their land. The Vledder Aa and the Tilgrup also suffered this fate, resulting in the nature reserves suffering from severe desiccation.

Fortunately, insights have changed and streams are being given free rein again. In Aekingerbroek, the consequences are visible: nature is developing. This is good for plants and animals, but also for the variety of the landscape.

Cycle to the watchtower and look out over National Park Drents-Friese Wold. Do you also see the Canada Lake? Sand used to be mined here, creating this beautiful recreational lake. Take a dip before jumping back on your bike.
