19. The Does - Hoogmade
Between cycle junctions 41 and 54 you cycle along the river Does. This is one of the rivers or canals that was dug around 1200 after the Rhine estuary near Katwijk became blocked. Through this river, the Old Rhine is connected to the Kromme Does and the Braassemermeer.
The Does is part of the Rijnland drainage system and many polders used to and still discharge their water into this river. That is why many polder mills and pumping stations can be found here.
