On the left side of the Mattenkade you can see the mill and pumping station of the Hondsdijkse polder. The mill was already built in 1644, but not in this location. It originally stood at the Roomburg near Leiden, where it was used to refresh the water in the city canals.
In 1685 the mill was dismantled and rebuilt at the Slaaghsloot near the Marepoort. The mill was not in service for long and was already sold in 1693 to the board of the Hondsdijkse polder. The polder continued to be drained by the mill until 1959, when the polder board built a diesel pumping station next to it. The mill can still operate and is used to this day during extreme water levels or when the pumping station is out of service.
