Between cycle junctions 08 and 19 you cycle past the remains of the house Groot Poelgeest. A castle was probably built here as early as the thirteenth century, when the Lords of Poelgeest settled in Koudekerk. During the Eighty Years’ War the castle was occupied by Spanish troops.

When Gerrit van Poelgeest regained his castle in 1576, it turned out to be uninhabitable. A stately manor house was built on the site of the castle. In 1692 the property was sold and has fallen into decline ever since. Today only a small tower, the moats and a coach house from 1648 remain.

The Lords of Poelgeest, as large landowners, were well represented in the Rijnland board. Several members of this family were appointed as hoogheemraad, while Jan van Poelgeest was the only one to serve as dike reeve between 1454 and 1460.
