The mill stump of the Westbroekpolder. In the past you would see many windmills in the polder landscape. Some large polders were even drained by several mills. Many of these mills have become obsolete over time and disappeared. In many polders the windmills were replaced by steam, diesel or electric pumping stations. With these, excess water could be discharged at any desired moment.
On this route you cycle past several (former) polder mills. Some are still in their original state, while you also come across mills that have been ‘repurposed’ in the meantime. That is what happened with the Zuidbuurt mill, for example. In 1900 this mill was built for draining the Westbroekpolder. In 1932 the mill was partially demolished or ‘truncated’, leaving behind the mill stump. Nowadays it serves as a residence.
