Polderpark Cronesteyn is with 90 hectares the largest park in Leiden. In the park live many different plants and animals. Here you will find among other things a vegetable garden, butterfly meadows, an old country estate forest, nature-managed meadows, lots of water and woodland planting. Bird watchers can also enjoy themselves in the park: you will find special birds such as the black-tailed godwit, lapwing, chiffchaffs, garden warblers and the redshank.

In addition, Cronesteyn is a particularly historical place. On the site of the park, on the east side of the Vliet, used to stand Castle Cronesteyn, which was owned by the Van Alkemade family. Here, Floris van Alkemade built the first windmill in Rijnland in 1408. Unfortunately, nothing remains of the mill and the castle, although you can still see where the castle moat once ran.
