Zuylen Castle - Oud Zuilen

N 52.1271794 / E 5.0731416

Zuylen draws its name from the dynasty of the Van Zuylen. The castle was owned by the family up and until the 15th century. The castle appears in documents for the first time in 1247. Oostbroek Abbey provides the endless hereditary tenue for the ground. The castle, as we know it, finds its origins in 1522. The Van Tuyll van Serooskerken family purchased the castle in 1682 and resides here until 1951. The famous Belle van Zuylen belonged to this family. Jacob Marot, son of the architect Daniel Marot, rebuilds the complex in 1751, when he was commissioned to rebuild Zuylen Castle as an elegant country house. The defense function after all had been become redundant for a long time. Until today, the castle is home to a museum with an extensive collection from an 18th century noble home. At the renovated coach house you can enjoy fairtrade coffees and teas with cakes, organic juices and lunches made with homegrown produce.
