World Heritage Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout - Kinderdijk
The Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout has been UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Those 19 mills are, without a doubt, a stunning view. As an internationally known Dutch symbol, they attract huge numbers of visitors every year. But those mills were not built for the beautiful picture; they were created to prevent the Netherlands from flooding. A complex of mills, ditches, locks and dams are needed to keep the water at a safe distance. Farmers, citizens and administrators joined forces centuries ago to form water boards. If they stopped their work, Kinderdijk would be flooded again in no time. This unique piece of water management, the Kinderdijk-Elshout Mill Network, is therefore rightly placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
