De Beemster Polder has been a UNESCO World Heritage since 1999. At the beginning of the 17th century the Beemster Polder was created to turn threatening inland water into some 7,200 ha of fertile agricultural land. A dyke of 42 kilometres was built around the Beemster Lake, a ring canal was dug and then 43 windmills were put to work to drain the resulting lake. The reclamation was completed in 1612 and the layout of the polder could begin. In a tight geometric pattern and harmonious whole, roads and ditches were constructed and farms were built.

Did you know that De Beemster became so famous thanks to this perfectly ordered landscape design?
