World Heritage De Beemster Polder - Middenbeemster

N 52.5465715 / E 4.9111228

De Beemster Polder has been UNESCO World Heritage since 1999. At the beginning of the 17th century, the polder plant was set up to turn threatening inland waters into 7,200 ha of fertile farmland. A 42-kilometre dyke was built around the Beemstermeer, a ring canal was dug, and then 43 windmills were set to work to empty the lake. The reclamation was completed in 1612, and the development of the polder could begin. In a tight geometric pattern and harmonious whole, roads and ditches were constructed and farms were built. Did you know that De Beemster became so famous thanks to this perfectly arranged landscape design?
