Sypesteyn Castle Museum - Loosdrecht

N 52.1935415 / E 5.1224148

The original castle was destroyed by the French in 1673. Its ruins remained in family hands until 1804. In 1900, Henri van Sypestein re-acquired the castle. Henri, the last of his family, chose a historic style and he even used older foundations for the reconstruction. Upon completion in 1927, he transferred family portraits and numerous other collections from his residence in The Hague. He furnished the house as a family monument and a museum at the same time. The collection of 18th-century porcelain from Loosdrecht is very precious. The estate with its gardens offers lovely walks. There is also a café at the castle where you can enjoy coffees or lunch – in fine weather outside on the lovely terrace.
