Peperbus - Zwolle

N 52.5122877 / E 6.0901297

The history of the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, as the Peperbus is actually called, starts in the Hanze period. The tower was built between 1463 and 1481. Nine residents donated six bells to the church, one of which remains. The lantern, the upper part of the tower, was built later on. The first architect, Simon Penet, disappeared after a significant budget overrun. Jacob van Collen finished his work, at the expense of the money that the church masters had intended for the poor. In 1815 the tower was struck by lightning; a number of bells fell through the roof and damaged the organ. The tower was restored in 1828 where it took its current shape.
