Loevestein Castle - Poederoijen
Loevestein Castle, located in Rivierenland in Gelderland, is a medieval castle with a rich history and exciting stories about knights, prisoners and soldiers. A heritage attraction for young and old.
In the early 17th century, Loevestein became an official state prison and the famous escape of Hugo de Groot took place there. This Rotterdam scholar and council pensionary escaped in spectacular way from Slot Loevestein in 1621, where he was to serve a life sentence. Although De Groot was locked up, he was entitled to literature. Every so often, a large chest full of books was delivered. At the beginning, the chest was checked, but as time went by this happened less and less. This gave Hugo de Groot's wife, Maria van Reigersberch, the idea of smuggling her husband out of Loevestein.
