Duurstede Castle - Wijk bij Duurstede

N 51.9706305 / E 5.3441276

In 1270, Zweder van Abcoude built the first brick structure on the site of the old village of Dorestad. This was the donjon; a defendable residential tower. He named it Duurstede.

In the middle of the 15th century, the rule of the Van Abcoudes passed to the Bishop of Utrecht. David, a bastard son of Philips the Good, was appointed the new bishop of Utrecht. But he could not settle in Utrecht itself, because the popularly chosen Gijsbrecht van Brederode resided there as bishop. David therefore settled in Duurstede. He found the single donjon tower too poor and in no time he had the whole island extended into a castle, with the original square tower in the middle.

Today, the castle is a popular wedding and party venue. The surrounding park is free to visit.
