Dike gate - Hattem

N 52.4756381 / E 6.0698802

The economy was doing well in the Hanzetijd. Hanseatic cities became richer, but therefore also interesting for people who were looking for that wealth. That is why many cities were provided with walls and security gates. So was Hattem. The dike gate from the 14th century is a fine example of this. Although it has not always looked like this: when the tower was restored in 1908, the famous architect Pierre Cuijpers added a walkway and cap and corner towers to it. Moreover, there used to be a gateway in front of the dike gate, part of the connecting wall is still standing.
