Batteries on the Overeindseweg - Nieuwegein

N 52.0381875 / E 5.1162502

The De Batterijen fortress site on Overeindseweg is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (New Dutch Waterline) and is located on the Amsterdam Rhine Canal, next to the new bicycle bridge that connects Houten and Nieuwegein. The fort is not known to everyone, such as the Nieuwegein forts Vreeswijk and Jutphaas. The 'Batteries on the Overeindseweg' was constructed in 1871-1873 as an outpost for Fort Jutphaas. It was intended to protect the former village of Jutphaas from external attacks. The site contains six objects including bunkers, a wooden artillery shed and a concrete guardhouse. Since 2015, De Batterijen has had a new owner, who has realised a lively location in the green heart of Utrecht, Nieuwegein and Houten. The new destination for the fort is an inspiring environment with attention to history and nature. On weekends, holidaymakers can relax here and there are activities for children.
