Batteries on the Overeindseweg - Nieuwegein

N 52.0381875 / E 5.1162502

The Batteries fortress site on the Overeindseweg is part of the New Dutch Waterline and is located along the Amsterdam Rhine Canal, next to the cycle bridge connecting Houten and Nieuwegein. Unlike the Nieuwegein forts Vreeswijk and Jutphaas, this fort is not known to everyone.

The 'Batteries on the Overeindseweg' were constructed in 1871-1873 as an outpost for Fort Jutphaas. It had to protect the former village of Jutphaas against attacks from outside. Six objects can be found on the site, including bunkers, a wooden artillery shed and a concrete guard house. Since 2015, this landmark has had a new owner, who has realised a lively location in the green heart of Utrecht, Nieuwegein and Houten. The new destination for the fort is an inspiring environment with attention to history and nature. On weekends, recreational users can relax here and there are activities for children.
