Amerongen Castle - Amerongen

N 51.9971801 / E 5.4588613

Amerongen Castle is one of the best preserved Dutch houses from the Golden Age thanks to the original state of the Huys, the gardens and the collection. It has a rich family history of more than 700 years. In the 18th and 19th century, Amerongen Castle acquired a fine collection of cupboards, porcelain, silver, musical instruments and damask and of course numerous family portraits. All this can still be seen today because the castle is a museum and can be visited with one of the continuous tours.

After the First World War, Count von Aldenburg Bentinck gave shelter to the fleeing Kaiser Wilhelm II. He signed his abdication here. In May 1920, Wilhelm II moved to nearby Huis Doorn. The surrounding gardens are also splendid, with a rosary, a children's house and a 300 year old oak tree.
