Cycle route Exploring National Park De Maasheggen
Boxmeer, Gennep, Vierlingsbeek
Set out to explore National Park De Maasheggen. This nature park between Cuijk and Vierlingsbeek spans more than 2,000 hectares and is famous for its traditional hedgerow landscape. For centuries, hawthorn and blackthorn hedges have been woven here to mark field boundaries. It is said that over 300 kilometres of hedges form natural fencing between the meadows. In 2018, this unique cultural and natural landscape was designated as the 21st National Park of the Netherlands. The park also holds UNESCO Man & Biosphere status, thanks to its unique ecosystem with rare plants and animals such as otters, beavers and more than 100 bird species. With this cycle route, you will explore the most beautiful part of De Maasheggen. To create an enjoyable loop, you start on the other side of the River Meuse. Once in De Maasheggen, it feels as if time has stood still as you wind your way through a beautiful mosaic of hedges and meadows. Along the way, you pass several special sights. Visit the Monastery Garden of Sint Agatha, take a look at an old watermill in Vierlingsbeek and cycle through the nature area De Vilt.
