Cycle route Dwingelderveld and Mantingerveld

This beautiful cycle route from Hoogeveen takes you through the vast natural areas of the Dwingelderveld and Mantingerveld. Here you will experience peace and space in the midst of nature. National Park Dwingelderveld is the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe and is known for its rich biodiversity. Along the eastern edge you can walk along the iconic plank path, which winds through the wet heaths and places you in the middle of the landscape. Nearby is viewing tower De Schapenkop. From the top you will enjoy panoramic views over the heathland, with unusual plants, birds, and if you are lucky, a grazing flock of sheep. Mantingerveld, between Mantinge and Nieuw-Balinge, has an even more historic, almost untouched character. The area is characterised by ancient sand drifts, old oak forests and heathland. You will find unusual lichens, juniper bushes and a diversity of animals. During this cycle route, you will also pass the well-known VAM mountain. This artificial ‘mountain’ was created on an old rubbish dump and now offers a unique experience for sporty cyclists. With challenging climbs and stunning views, VAM Mountain is popular in the region. From the top, you look out over the Drenthe countryside, a unique experience in the otherwise flat province. Further on, you pass the Noordseschut Lock, a historic structure that provides insight into Drenthe's water history. The lock has played a role in water management and shipping for centuries. Finally, you pass a reconstructed Sod hut Nieuw Balinge. This simple dwelling, constructed from wood and heather sods, provides a fascinating glimpse into the hard life of the poor Drenthe people of yesteryear.
