Historic cycle route from Zuidwolde to Hoogeveen

This cycle route takes you through one of the oldest inhabited areas of the Netherlands. People have lived in this part of Drenthe for thousands of years, which you can see along the way in the expansive fields, old farms and historic villages. Discover Hoogeveen, a town that originated in the 17th century when the peat was dug for peat extraction, which was then an important fuel. Once in Hoogeveen, you can make a short stop at corn mill De Zwaluw, which symbolises the agricultural growth that followed after the peatlands were reclaimed. From here, you cycle along a quiet route towards Zuidwolde, where you can enjoy the Drenthe landscape that has been shaped by human hands for centuries. Zuidwolde is first mentioned in 1275, although under the name Suthwalda. Along the way, visit Museum de Wemme, a charming local museum that gives an impression of what daily life used to be like here. From the 19th century to today, the Drenthe countryside has undergone many changes, but the simplicity and tranquillity have remained. Tip! At junction 29 (at Paviljoen Nijstad) cycle a little further towards junction 75 in Echten. Here you can visit an authentic sod hut and the beautiful estate of Huis te Echten.
