Essential for trade and transport at the time, they are now indispensable for recreation and tourism in Friesland. In the 20th century, they were further developed to give cyclists and walkers access to the beautiful watery landscape. Not only are they practical, of course, but now the ferries are part of cultural heritage. On this route, you make use of two cycle ferries that take you across the rippling water. Pitstops along the route introduce you to local history, tasty local products or beautiful nature. Along the way, you have beautiful views over the farmlands and water. Tell me, this just feels like a holiday, doesn't it? We recommend cycling this route in the spring and summer months due to the sailing times of the cycle ferries. Please note! The ferries do not sail all year round. In the low season only on weekends and in the winter months they do not sail. So check in advance the sailing times and the junctions over which you can detour if necessary.
