Cycle route through three nature areas on the Veluwe
Hoenderloo, Kootwijk, Harskamp
Along this route you cycle through varied landscapes, including heathland, sand drifts and forests. This is what makes the Veluwe so beautiful! There are several viewpoints where you can take a break and look out over these beautiful nature areas. The Deelerwoud covers 2,380 hectares and you will mostly find forest and heath here. This nature area lies north of Arnhem and is located between De Hoge Veluwe National Park and Veluwezoom National Park. At the Kootwijkerzand you pass the largest sand drift area in Western Europe, which is 700 hectares in size. At Planken Wambuis most of the area is covered with forest and heath, but a small part consists of open sand drifts. There are also many old farmlands, a few burial mounds and the hamlet of Mossel. In addition to all these beautiful nature areas, you also pass the impressive Cathedral Radio Kootwijk and the Aviation Museum at Deelen Air Base. A visit to the large building of Cathedral Radio Kootwijk is something you will not soon forget. In 1929 Queen Mother Emma made the first radiotelephone call to the Dutch East Indies from here. The Aviation Museum at Deelen Air Base takes you back into the history of this small airfield, which was transformed by the Germans during the war into a (then) modern base.
