A little meander along the Linge
Leerdam, Asperen, Heukelum
At just over 100 kilometres long, the Linge is one of the longest rivers in the Netherlands. The name De Linge therefore means "the Long Water" in Old Dutch. On this cycle route, we do not let you meander along the entire river, but we chose an interesting stretch, leaving enough time to get to know the charming villages along the way. During the tour, you will cross picturesque towns such as Heukelum, Spijk, Oosterwijk, and Leerdam. Leerdam stands out as the glass city of the Netherlands, with a glass-blowing tradition dating back to the 18th century. This tradition began with the arrival of a glass factory in Leerdam. In the National Glass Museum, you will find everything about that history and in the glassworks, you can see that they still haven't lost the art of glassblowing here. Another cultural gem is the Museum Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden in Leerdam, a unique historical hofje that offers a glimpse into life in the 18th century. The museum hofje features an indoor garden, an outdoor garden and an impressive collection of 17th-century paintings in the authentic courtyard house. Heukelum Castle, located close to the river Linge, tells the story of medieval power and splendour in this region. The castle, with its rich history dating back to the 13th century, offers a wonderful example of historical architecture and life in earlier times. The natural environment of the Linge offers more than just picturesque scenery; it is a habitat for various plant and animal species, contributing to the ecological value of the region. The river itself, with its calm waters, is home to various aquatic animals and its banks are rich in flora and fauna. A nice round trip, then, to stretch your legs and get to know this beautiful stretch of Linge better. Can't get enough of the Linge and still have some time left? Then a boat trip with Rederij Leerdam is a nice addition to this lovely day! Note! Along the way, you will encounter a bicycle ferry. It sails from 1 April to 1 October. Check the Pit stop and the website for more information on the sailing schedule. Do you cycle the route when the ferry does not sail? Then cycle round via nodes 38-26-39-54-37 (or vice versa from the other direction).
