Bronkhorst originated as a farming settlement near the former castle Bronkhorst, the ancestral home of the Lords of Bronckhorst, an old knightly family. An ideal base from which to explore this area. Nothing is left of castle Bronkhorst, once one of the most important castles in the Achterhoek. Only the castle hill is a reminder of this illustrious castle. Fortunately, the surrounding area is rich in castles and country estates. This cycle route takes you along nine castles and country estates of various types. This route also includes privately occupied castles and country houses. These houses and the surrounding grounds are usually not open to the public. This is usually clearly indicated. Please take this into account. During the Day of the Castle, the grounds and sometimes the castle or country house on this route are accessible to the public.
