Near Brummen, the IJssel makes a wide bend around Cortenoever. This created a unique landscape of meandering water with deep gullies and high ridges. Residents of this area lived with the occasional high water. When the lock in the Bakkersdijk was opened, children would simply take the boat to school. Reuversweerd Castle stands in the middle of this flood plain. The manor has not been inhabited since 1945, but played a major role in the resistance during the Second World War. Moreover, it is said that there are ghosts that haunt the castle at certain times... Coldenhove is located to the west of Eerbeek. This estate used to be owned by the House of Orange. King William III bought Koldenhove Castle with its moat, gardens and ponds and used it as a pleasure palace during his hunting trips. The castle was destroyed by fire, but the estate is still there. During the Second World War and the Hungarian Uprising, wooden cottages on the estate provided shelter to people in hiding and refugees. Coldenhove is also home to a large paper factory. Can you imagine that it all started with a paper mill in 1643? Between Cortenoever and Coldenhove you will be surprised by small villages, beautiful nature and nice places to stop for a break.
