Hoek van Holland, Maassluis
Hook of Holland was originally a sandbank in the Meuse. When the Nieuwe Waterweg canal was built, a small settlement arose, populated by workers and employees of the Department of Public Works. It became a popular seaside resort, although this changed temporarily in World War II with the construction of the Atlantic Wall. Maassluis also suffered from the occupiers: many ships in the region were requisitioned and equipped with anti-aircraft guns. During this route, you will cycle past Futureland in Rotterdam, where you will learn more about the expansion of Rotterdam's ports. At Fort 1881 in Hoek van Holland, you can tour one of the best-preserved coastal defence forts in the Netherlands. Another historical Pit stop is the fortified town of Brielle, definitely worth a visit! Note! Along the way, you will encounter a (bicycle) ferry twice. Between Maassluis and Rozenburg (junctions 40 and 28) you will take the ferry Rozenburg-Maassluis. Details check the Pit stop. Between Hook of Holland and the Maasvlakte, you sail with the Hoeksveer. It sails only from 1 April to 1 October and not seven days a week. Check the Pit stop and the website for more information on the sailing schedule. Do you cycle the route when the ferry does not sail? Then shorten your route and cycle via junctions 98-97 and 54 (or vice versa from the other direction).
