At Drenthe, shipping may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Yet the province has a number of waterways. Meppel has several shipyards, both for pleasure and commercial shipping. In the neighbourhood of Koekange you will find a pingoruine. A pingo is a lens-shaped body of ice. As the climate gets warmer, the ice melts, leaving a crater or round lake. Between De Wijk and Meppel lies the hamlet of De Schiphorst, where you can admire De Havixhorst as a manor.
