Cycling along the Oester Dam

If you look at the original Delta Plan, you won't immediately find the Oester Dam among them. Yet this dam is unmistakably part of the Delta Works. After the devastating flood disaster of 1953, a firm commitment was made to protect the Netherlands, and especially Zeeland, from floods. To preserve the dynamics of ebb and flow in the Eastern Scheldt, a flood barrier was chosen that partially allows the tide. The construction of the Oester dam ensured that reduced ebb and flow was maintained, which is beneficial for shellfish farming. Indeed, many shellfish are farmed in the nearby village of Yerseke. On the Oesterboulevard in Yerseke, you can therefore taste the tastiest oysters, fresh from the oyster pits. Around Oesterdam you will find the vast oyster fields. At certain places, visitors are allowed to search for oysters themselves. To preserve nature, you are allowed to bring a maximum of 5 kg of oysters for your own use. Pay attention to the tides though; before you know it, your feet will be wet! Cycling along the waterfront, you can see the landscape move with the position of the water, which creates beautiful images.
