Cycle route from castle to castle
's-Heerenberg, Emmerich, Grieth
This route takes you through the border region of the Netherlands and Germany. Through the Bergherbos in Montferland and the German national forest Eltenerberg. Through the Dutch castle town of 's-Heerenberg, full of historic buildings, and to the beautiful German Schloss Moyland. This castle has a magnificent garden that you can also visit separately. In Emmerich, the Rhine Museum is well worth a visit. You will cross the impressive Rhine twice at Emmerich. You will cycle along the salt marshes at Grieth, a protected nature reserve with large concentrations of endangered meadow birds such as the redshank, the skylark and the yellow wagtail. You will also pass through the Grietherorter Altrhein nature reserve, a unique complex of old river arms that depends on the natural flood dynamics of the Rhine. The lower banks are sometimes flooded for months at a time, creating a unique natural environment. Softwood forests with white willows and poplars. After this varied and intensive cycle tour, it is wonderful to settle down on a cosy terrace in 's-Heerenberg and let yourself be pampered. Please note: you will encounter a bicycle ferry along the way. It operates from Palm Sunday until the end of October. Check the Pitstop and the website for more information about the sailing schedule. Are you cycling the route when the ferry is not running? Then cycle from junction 47 via junctions 54-50-59-56-84 (or vice versa from the other direction). This alternative route is approximately 14 km longer.
