Cycle route from river Mark to Hollands Diep
Zevenbergen, Terheijden, Moerdijk
An important part of the Rhine-Meuse delta, the tidal river Hollands Diep is the main base of the Waal and Maas rivers. Tides used to cause the river's height to vary by up to 2 metres. Since the advent of the Delta Works, this tidal influence is only 30 centimetres. From the Hollands Diep, many ships sail towards Rotterdam, Antwerp and from Antwerp towards Germany. During this cycle route, you will pass several beautiful waters in this river landscape. In fact, the Hollands Diep is not far from the Biesbosch, a beautiful area full of Dutch nature. Past vast meadows with beautiful vistas, you cycle along dikes and cycle paths near the water. You immediately understand why this area is also called ‘the river landscape’. In the year 1981, a small head popped out of the water in Breda's River Mark. A stray seal had swum exceptionally far inland and made itself a nice spot on a boat. From here, the seal caught fish and lay sunbathing. To return the creature to nature, it was caught and returned to the wild from Pieterburen. Locals gave her the name Moby Dick; in memory of this special creature, there is a statue on the Koningin Emmalaan in Breda.
