Oldenzaal, Saasveld, Weerselo
The municipality of Oldenzaal is located in National Park Northeast Twente, which has an ash landscape. An ash (also called eng or enk) is a high-lying field, found on sandy soil. The oldest plots of ash trees in this area date back to the first millennium AD. Small-scale landscape with many wooded banks, but also large plots of forest and the presence of many fens and streams, are characteristic of this area. A beautiful wide and rolling area with many opportunities for agriculture, recreation and tourism. Cycle along Landgoed Scholtenhaer-Rhododendronlaan De Lutte near Oldenzaal, cycling between the enormous rhododendron hedges that are at their most beautiful from early April to late June when they bear beautiful purple flowers. You'll also pass the Hakenberg, a mountain created by shifting Scandinavian ice. Water and forest can be found at both Het Molenven and Het Hulsbeek. Of course, you can also get off your bike to see something else. Get off at the Saint Plechelmus basilica, for example, or at the protected village Het Stift. In one day, you will discover all the beautiful spots in this area and Oldenzaal itself.
