The Hague, Voorburg, Ypenburg
The Second World War left its mark on The Hague and the surrounding area. This was mainly due to the Ypenburg airbase being located here: the ideal strategic location for the Germans to get closer to the government in The Hague. Villa Dorrepaal was occupied by the German occupiers so they could quickly reach the government from this location. The cycle route through aviation city The Hague takes you past many places that you may not have known were important locations in the Second World War. See monuments, statues, old houses and the famous ILSY park where large aviation shows were held for years. You will also cycle past the Fokker Terminal, where thousands of young people were trained as pilots. Start and end this cycle route at the control tower in Ypenburg. The tower was badly damaged during the war, but has been fully restored. All of the tower's original details have been preserved during the restoration.
