Cycle route along branches of the Rhine
Houten, Bunnik
On this cycle route, you’ll discover the natural beauty of three different rivers. You start at the (Neder)Rijn, which splits near Wijk bij Duurstede into the Lek and Kromme Rijn. In Bunnik, you’ll pass along the peaceful Kromme Rijn – a lovely spot to stop and take in the view of the water. Further on, near Houten, you’ll cross the Lek and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. It’s a joy to cycle across the bridges and ride along the water, where boats regularly pass by. In and around Utrecht, you’ll find plenty of cosy spots to take a break and enjoy a tasty snack. Along the way, you’ll encounter several traces of the New Dutch Waterline, a unique defence system that used controlled flooding to keep enemies out. Scattered through the landscape are forts, a battery, and a waterline museum – all showing how water was once used as a weapon. Castles and country estates are also part of this historic landscape, combining military heritage with natural beauty. Each fort and castle has its own charm and story, making this an active day out that’s also full of discoveries.
