Cycling past bird-friendly fields

The moment your bike rolls off the ferry on Texel, birdwatching begins. On the largest Wadden Island, birds are always active. This route introduces you to various species, including two special birds of prey: the mysterious short-eared owl and the elegant hen harrier. Both nest and hunt for field mice in open fields. Spotting a short-eared owl takes a bit of luck. It flies silently and often low over the ground. A hen harrier is easier to find, especially in winter, gliding visibly over open fields. During its swaying flight, it holds its wings in a shallow V shape, just like other harriers. The owl often sits motionless for hours on a post or a molehill, while the harrier is more active. Vogelbescherming (BirdLife Netherlands), in cooperation with the Farmland Bird Knowledge Centre and the Wadden Fund, has created special bird-friendly fields at several places along the Wadden coast, including here on Texel.
